The research problem, purpose and the research questions are important parts of a research study. These parts give key information that forms the backbone of a study (Kumar, 2014).
Research Problem
One of the main goals of many employees is getting promotions to a higher and relatively better job position. This also true for employees in the fire service, where employees work hard to grow up the ranks from firefighters to being in charge of teams or even departments (Ballaro & Blanchard, 2018) . However, the promotions are unfairly awarded at times, thus leaving out people who are totally suited to be promoted. Ballaro & Blanchard (2018) revealed that one of the major hindrances to promotions in the fire department is gender. Women have to work extra hard to prove themselves, since the fire service is considered a masculine field. Skin color is another possible hindrance to promotions of workers in the fire department. A research study by Riccucci & Saldivar (2014) revealed that even though people with color gain opportunities to join the fire department, it is sometimes very difficult for them to get promotions. It is therefore important to have a promotion matrix, which clearly shows a promotion ladder with equal chances to all employees ( Cheng & Ho, 2011). This research will seek to unravel the benefits of a promotion matrix in solving promotion problems in fire service.

Purpose
