Life never seizes to surprise. There are no rehearsals in the experience life throws in our way. Some moments or experiences are filled with fond memories whereas others are too painful for us but taking every moment with optimism has led to many fond memories and am lucky not to have experienced many hurting moments. I believe that from the many fond experiences I have lived my best memorable day was on April 26 th 2014 during our family vacation in Kenya, Africa. We had been in the country for five days when we visited Maasai Mara, where my dad worked. I always dreamt of having great experiences and adventures as dad had narrated during my younger days. Being young and naïve, I never concerned myself with the life threatening circumstances that dad was faced with during his ventures with wildlife. The modern technology that has brought visual experiences at the comfort of our homes has led to young people to imagine themselves in the situations movies stars find themselves in during their expeditions. I had always imagined myself emulating such experiences and being the hero but I never imagined it would ever happen until this particular day.
I rose up early that morning and dressed in my combat clothes ready to explore and enjoy myself to the fullest. My family was eager to explore too hence we started our tour around the park at around 10 a.m. The experience around the park was enjoyable than the documentaries I had seen and I never wanted the day to be over. Dad was off-duty thus he proposed camping. We gladly accepted thus as darkness cropped in we found ourselves a camping site. My mother and sister prepared super as dad and I made the tents that we would spend the nights in. The experience was unimaginable and I could not believe that my dream of spending a night in the wild was about to come true. The conducive environment made me appreciate nature whereas the sound of animals at close range made me shiver but I was still excited to enjoy my night.

As all great moments tend to be short lived crisis cropped in, I was unprepared for the turn of events when dad was called to aid some of the tourists in the furthest corner from an elephant that had gone rampage. The trumpet from the elephant filled the air as dad took his rifle and headed to the location. He asked me to be on the look if the elephant would run towards our camp. Suddenly the sound of gun shots filled the air followed by louder trumpets. The trumpets were sounded just a few meters away and there were thuds as the elephant was running for his life towards the camp. The shaking of the ground almost made me piss my pants and breathless. The cries from the neighboring tent as the elephant passed through it paralyzed my body with fear.
Everyone was speechless and praying that this was all a dream but the reality was about to crop in as the elephant threw one of the guards into the tent. His lifeless and bleeding body as he pointed towards the exit of the tent. We all dashed to the exit living the guard to bleed out as he had whispered to run for our dear lives. The elephant was too close to the tent before it fell to the ground with a big bang just inches away from the tent. Dad among other guards continued firing until the trumpets and roars from pain were replaced with deafening silence. The injured guard was taken to the nearby healthcare center by my dad’s colleagues but his lifelessness and the pain he was experiencing made me appreciate each day I am safe. The day had started brightly and I was excited to explore my imaginations only for the experience to bring shock and trauma as the night seemed doomed but at last I learnt to appreciate the safety back home and appreciate dad’s work as he goes through such days more often than not to ensure we live comfortably and safely at home. Since the day I have learnt the importance of life and safety thus ensuring I live positively while avoiding life threatening situations.
