“Untamed Elegance” is the title of the concert that I viewed on You Tube. The performance was held at Lincoln Center Orchestra by the Jazz band. Untamed Elegance was composed and arranged by Victor Goines, who was also a tenor saxophonist during the performance. Other performers and the instruments involved were Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Kenny Rampton, Shareef Clayton, trumpet; Elliot Mason, Chris Crenshaw, Vincent Gardner, trombone; Sherman Irby, Ted Nash, alto saxophone; Walter Blanding, tenor saxophone; Paul Nedzela, baritone saxophone; Adam Birnbaum, piano; Carlos Henriquez, acoustic double bass; Ali Jackson, drums; and the guest Jon Irabagon who used a saxophone. Untamed Elegance was originally performed and recorded on 28 th October, 2016 in the Rose Theater, at 2 pm. It took 53 minutes, which is almost an hour to complete the suite.
Jazz lovers and fans filled the Rose theatre. The estimated size of the audience during the concert was about 200 people. The audience seemed lively and applauded after the performance of every song during the concert. They also cheered at their favorite performances and performers. The audience reaction on You Tube through the comments section also proofs that they enjoyed the concert to the fullest. The comments were full of positive energy and satisfaction acquired from the concert. The comments include Brett Dickinson’s love for the baritone and tenor sax connection on the solo, Phyllis Petras who refers to the performance as being ‘fly,’ Anon who appreciated the art, and Luis Sevilla; ‘to play Sax then Pulling out the piccolo and flute then from playing the trombone and pulling out a sousaphone! What a talented orchestra,’ among others ( Jazz at Lincoln Centre. (2017 ). A few confirmed their physical appearance at the theatre during the concert, with others mingling with the performers like Victor and Wynton.

There were six pieces performed at the concert. The opening piece was referred to as the “The Business of America is Business,” which included a saxophone solo from the composer, a trombone by Elliot Mason and a bass incorporated near the end. “The Elephant in the Room,” was the second piece and it involved saxophonists Camille Thurman and Paul Nedzela mixed with a drum kit, and later the trumpets were engaged in an exhilarating solo. Goines did a solo turn in “The ‘It’ Thing,” which was accompanied by a pair of flutes. Dan Nimmer, the pianist, took a solo highlight on the fourth piece, “Laboratories of Ideas,” while trumpeter Marsalis and saxophonist Sherman Irby exchanged lines in the, “Drunk as a Skunk.” The last piece was called the “Bold, Naked and Sensational.” I really enjoyed the last movement . It spoke everything about the jazz age where everybody did the things they did because they really wanted to, and with transparency and no interest for what other people would say about it. “Bold, Naked and Sensational,” summed up what the concert was all about as according to Goines. I least enjoyed “Laboratories of Ideas” because it had chaotic swings on the instruments that showed the ways of a drunkard on the loose.
The way they exchanged roles on each song is what surprised me. They were so perfect on each piece. The passion, support and cooperation during the performance were very remarkable. The performance video relates perfectly with the content I learnt in class especially on the interchangeability of instruments during performance which creates amazing and lovable swings. The concert was great. The performers were awesome. The performance clearly reflects The Roaring Twenty’s jazz music which was on its rise around the world. This is represented in every song that was performed in the concert.
