Public transport also known as mass transit is a shared means of passenger transport which is available for use by people from one point to another. The passenger transport involves people that travel for different reasons and those that move to different points. Public transportation, for example, a train or bus system follows a preset route that involves taking and letting off a passenger at set stops. The public transportation does not cover wider enough area to collect passengers from all suburbs and also fail to stop at precise and exact locations that passengers are heading. Therefore, this causes a lot of inconveniences as most people would need a secondary means of transportation from the stops (Giezen, 2012). This paper is therefore going to look at factors that c auses people not to use public transportation.

The primary reason as to why most people do not prefer public transportation is the inconveniences that come along with it. The public transit involves the movement of all kinds of individuals from one point to another by a common means of carriage say road transport. Different people move from one location to another for various reasons and to different points. Most public transportation works on a set schedule whereby the time of departure is the same each day. People have to be there at the exact time to catch up with their means of transportation failure to which they incur a consequential loss of time to have to wait for the next bus or train (Arvola, 2014). The reason for somebody to delay does not give room to readjust to their schedule hence a consequential loss of time.

Secondly, there exists no privacy in the public transportation due to the overcrowding that denies each a personal space. No one has control over what people do in public including snooping at phone chats, conversations and even contents of one's bag. At the public transportation means sitting with people you do not know, a feeling of always being in the limelight especially when one holds a very critical position at the workplaces arise, hence traveling in fear. When people invade our privacy, we feel insecure and so prone to attack or harm. Insecurity will lead to being uncomfortable wherever in public (Giezen, 2012). Equally, people would feel exposed to germs and even communicable diseases in the crowded areas. Coughing, sneezing and signs of contagious illnesses would lead to passengers being uncomfortable in public means transportation.

The limited space in the public transportation is another cause of people not wanting to use the public transportation (Giezen, 2012). Cases, whereby a traveler would want to carry some luggage for the holidays or returning from a shopping venture, would mean inconveniences since those goods would not fit on one's lap. A scenario where we would want to carry as much shopping as possible home causes problems because of no space to comfortably have our luggage and stuff. Parents that would like to travel along with their children experience difficulties in the crowded buses or trains because of limited space. When having a conversation with somebody you meet on the bus or train, there is no good way to end your conversation instead you have to go on and on until your ride is over. Socializing is good but to the public means you can get into contact with people that would rather be irritating to continue a conversation. Despite the fact that the public transportation is scheduled, it can also turn out to be irregular due to delay or unavoidable circumstances such as a breakage that needed a garage attendant. People that are to report to work or school would be late by having to wait for the train or bus that turns out late.

Equally, the public transportation fails to give each passenger comfort of having them dropped at their doorsteps hence are forced to look for secondary means or walk to their destinations. In the case of change of plan by any of the passengers, the traveler would rather cancel plans that are crucial because, in the public transportation, no one has control except the set time for departure and arrival. An individual would not want to use a public means if in the middle of the way he/she is asked to return to work or home because something came up. Equally, the individual is to wait until the next stop to consider a return which would have consumed a lot of time. Despite the fact that the public transportation is scheduled, it can also turn out to be irregular due to delay or unavoidable circumstances such as a breakage that needed a garage attendant. People that are to report to work or school would be late by having to wait for the train or bus that turns out late (Giezen, 2012).

Another common occurrence in the public transportation is the gang and terrorist cases that occur at public places. Most attacks aim at the buses or trains that carry a mass of people to get the attention of the government (Arvola, 2014). Individuals who have ever heard of terrorist attacks or gang attacks would not want to travel by public means because of the fear of life even if they have an assurance by the federal government. The passengers would argue that you never know the type of crimes that occur or which ones just occur without the consent of the bus and train owners. Since nothing can qualify a stranger as being harmless, then the issues of doubt arise each time one uses the public means.

In conclusion, public transportation is a safe means of transportation because it helps us save on fuel and high maintenance fees that private means such as cars require. Due to these lower costs when using the means everyone would like it that they spend less each time especially on traveling. However, the inconveniences that come along with the public means such as lack of privacy, limited space, lack of control and wastage of time, make people go an extra mile to spend more and still enjoy their space, security, and privacy (Arvola, 2014). The urge to be free and flexible when moving from one point to another would lead to many private means of transportation emerging in the future because everyone is striving for freedom.
