"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails." I Corinthians 13:4-8a
2) Does the drinking, mentioned very often, have an impact on the story? Why? How?
Drinking is a central theme in the ongoing story. Mel, Terri, Laura and Nick are all described to be partaking in a bottle of gin in Mel and Kerri’s apartment. They quickly finish one bottle and Mel supplies another. They have lime and ice to go together with the gin. Additionally, the teenager who was said to have been involved in an accident with the old couple is said to have been drunk. Drinking, mentioned often in this story, seems to help with enhancing the narrative. The gin that they are drinking makes Mel and Terri, the hosts, somewhat more open. It also seems to make Laura more attentive to Mel’s narration of events. The gin causes Mel to go into the intimate details of his narration which make even Terri his wife uncomfortable. Drinking lubricates the stories between the two couples, breaks any existing tension between the couples and makes even taboo topics acceptable to speak about. Finally, drinking allows Mel to introduce a different angle to his narrative, by telling the other three about the drunken teenager who caused an accident on the old married couple.

3) Terri has an interesting idea of what love is – what do you think about it?
Terri seems to be accepting of a different idea of love, where the person’s actions do not seem to matter, only their words. If they tell you that they love you, believe them by all means, regardless of what their actions say. This, I find, is a toxic type of love. It is the type of love that ends up hurting the victims, as seen in the story where Terri’s former husband, Ed ends up committing suicide. In the course of the story, we also see that Ed had been threatening to kill Terri and Mel, all in the name of love. This, I find is a very toxic type of love.
14) There are four characters, but whose character is really being shown?
In the course of the narrative, we have been exposed to the characters of Mel, Terri, Nick and Laura. The main character seems to be Mel, who seems to be steering the conversation. In the process, we get to see that Mel can be emotional, brash, caring, loving and dismissive, all in the same breath. We are also allowed to see what Mel’s idea of love is, and how that juxtaposes against his wife Terri’s. In essence, the narrations done by Mel lend us a view into the workings of what his personality and character really is.
