Mariachi music has gained acceptability in the new generation music due to its distinctive rhythms and its association with the highly influential Mexican culture. Mariachi music has incorporated other music forms such as waltzes and polka. Mariachi music has been recognized as a culturally influential art form and an intangible cultural heritage. Mariachi music styles include cumbia, chotis, joropos, and huapango, among others.

Mariachi has become the most familiar genre of Mexican music to most Americans because of the increased exposure that Mariachi music has gotten over time due to its early establishment. Sheehi Daniel (2006) asserts that Mariachi music was well established in America, Los Angeles, in 1959, but the genre had a considerable grounding since the early 1930s. Compared to other Mexican music genres like Duranguense, which gained popularity in the early 2000s.

Mariachi music also has common because of the over hyping and the increased exposure that the genre gets over other genres. According to Daniel, mariachi music is the most preferred genre that performs in American events within the culture and outside the Mexican ethnic setting. The annual festivals in Fresno and Tucson receive widespread media attention with popular artists like Pepe Aguilar headlining the shows. 

Mariachi music has also become popular due to the assimilation of their style of music by some popular American musicians. Popular musicians like Elvis Presley and Glenn Miller have been known to have a lengthy association with Mariachi music and stars and thus affected their music style to some extent. The American-based English singer Sophie Ellis popular song ‘Death of Love’ is said to be inspired by the Mariachi music style (Harrington, 2012).

In summary, the Mariachi music style has become popular due to the media coverage of annual events and exposure, assimilation into the American music style, and promotion of the music style by some American artists. Against other genres of music, Mariachi music has become so successful in America and the world. The power of Mariachi music is an example of the power of music to transcend borders.
