As a human being, you learn a lot about life each and every day. When I was born in Azerbaijan, I had dreams and goals of who and what I wanted to be in life. Yet those dreams have led me to even greater heights that I had not even envisioned. Azerbaijan Is mainly a Turkish speaking nation with a very interesting history. The population is mainly made up of the Azerbaijani (Azeri) speaking people with rest taking up Russian and Armenian. Tracing my roots takes me to the Oghuz branch of the Turkish speaking people currently occupying Iran, Georgia, and my homeland Azerbaijan.
The country is predominantly made up of Shia Muslims, thus spelling the kind of childhood I had growing up. As a girl, Islam spells out how one should behave and act in private and in public. With strict parents, I was however, accorded the privilege of going to good schools. As a child, I was never quiet, and this has really helped me become the person that I am today both as an individual and as a mother of 2. My eagerness to learn and see how things work led me into the medical field. I was ever yearning to learn how a man can function as he is, and curiosity led me to dentistry. The idea of a person being able to ‘bend bones’ was intriguing. So I went to medical school and became a practicing dentist in Azerbaijan.

While that would have been the end of my story as a Muslim Azerbaijani girl, my parents were very supportive of my endeavors and helped push me further. My brother and I loved reading about other countries. During our free time, we would recall any countries that we liked and tried to act we had read about them or seen them on television. Ten years ago, I was able to move to Canada, and it has been a dream come true for me after getting married. The young, naïve girl from a remote Azerbaijani village is now able to speak English and even hold a conversation. One of my most cherished moments in life was in November 2010 when I got married. I was both scared and happy that I had finally made the step but had no idea what lay ahead. The notion of marriage in Islam normally spells doom for the woman. She is supposed to quit her job and become a housewife in most reserved households. My husband’s decision to support me in pursuing a new career into computer programming feels me with joy and hope that my future will be way better than my past and present. The present holds promise as I go to class to everyday knowing, I will someday be able to create programs that will change lives. For instance, I have noticed that many hospitals lack proper information management systems that can guide a patient from the moment they walk in to the last step out of the hospital. By creating one program that can manage each step from th triage to the prescriptions and even follow up with the patient, I believe I would make work easier for all hospital employees in service delivery.
While my past has been very unremarkable, I believe the future holds even more than I can imagine. While my story may not be as fascinating as the legend of the "Miracle Child from Khojaly," I can only plan and hope for the best. Currently, I am pursuing my Level A in English for Academic Purposes. After successfully completing this course, I intend to go ahead and learn computer programming to satisfy a long harbored desire to create my own applications. As a computer programmer, I believe I will not only fulfill a dream but through it, I can inspire my children to go for whatever they want in life.
I will forever remember the days when my son and daughter were born because they are very special. Their lives spell hope for me in the future that I am not sure of. My desire is to make them proud and give them the best life possible and push them to be the best they could ever be. They are true gems, and their lives will always have me as a beacon of hope if I make sure that I realize my dreams. Raising kids is not easy, but I can recall being a kid and dreaming about what I have now filled me with ecstasy. I cannot wait to see the day they graduate from high school and set off to college as fully grown adults. As a mother, my future is filled with the responsibility of ensuring that they get the best foundation in life. By coming to Canada, my husband and I could get a better opportunity at succeeding in life than we had in Azerbaijan. With an ever-changing world, the future is ever brighter each new day than it was yesterday. I intend to use my present to make my future better by learning and ensuring that I complete my course in time. I am sure my future self will be proud of my present self, owing to the decisions I have made today.
