The forty-year-old man, Gurov, in The Lady with the Dog, is intrigued by the young lady who walkes along the sea because of his dislike towards his Shrewish intelligent wife. Therefore, he is coupled with various love affairs outside his marriage. He secretly acknowledges that he is at ease with women despite his disparage against women calling them of the lower race (Chekhov, 1904). Therefore, the plot revolves around Dimitri’s insecurities with women and his focus on Anna, who is also in a marriage that she does not appreciate. On the other hand, June May, the protagonist in A Pair of Tickets, denies herself as a Chinese after growing up in San Francisco as an American-Chine. The plot revolves around June May trying to understand the way of life about Chinese people and the way her parents had taken care of and raised her in the United States ( Tan. n.d ). It is evident that as soon as her mother passes away, June may start identifying her roots and origin. The two stories share the similarity of denial that is instigated by the charactesrs focusing on various paths in their lives.
A Pair of Tickets has its setting in both the United States and in China. The United States provide the primary setting for June May, who was brought up in the country by her parents and subscribes to her native culture. However, China is introduced as her home country with various mandates she is expected to fulfill due to her local country. The two countries, therefore, provide the setting for the story. On the other hand, The Lady with the Dog is set in Russia, with Moscow as one of the cities where most activities occur. Comparison of the story with that of A Pair of Tickets shows that the two borrows from diverse cultures in their settings to present an entertaining story.
The study has compared and contrasted The Lady with the Dogs and A Pillar of Tickets with the interest of gaining more knowledge on the stories. The research found that the two stories display notable differences based on the setting and characters. There also exists some degree of similarity in the plot and expectations of characters.
