People communicate in different ways. I express myself through fashion. Ever since I was a kid, I understood that the body could become a tool that humanity can use to communicate messages. Growing up from the East side of Peru, opportunities were never presented to me. I learn from a young age that one has to create opportunities as my parents advocated. As small business owners, they lived by the traditional norms of managing businesses and never adopted modern techniques.
My passion for fashion started ever since I was a kid. Fashion was always an important part of my life. However, according to my relatives and friends, they believed that fashion was meant to be for ladies. Their stereotypic culture never deterred me from pursuing fashion and wanting to understand more. My friends would even call me a freak since I was going for a goal that no one believed I would conquer. As a believer in change and experimentation, I used social media and friends as models to market my parent's clothing store to clients who came to gain local television attention. Such achievements boosted my confidence, which had previously been oppressed by my classmates in school. Even though the conditions were harsh, I stood up against such humiliations and advocated for what I believed in – fashion.

Anybody who knows me knows that my goals in life have always been around fashion. If I could be anything in this world, I would choose to advertise and market fashion brands or at least be in the fashion world. When it comes to styles and clothing, I believe that it is an art that would allow one to express themselves to the world. Using my parents' business as a tool for change, I directed advertising videos, which was a platform that I put my skills into practice. My experience in the marketing and advertising sector blended with my passion for fashion makes me the right candidate for the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) college in New York.
Having basic financial and managerial skills at my mum's clothing store, I have gained invaluable fashion retail experience and interpersonal skills that have improved my confidence that was not present while I was growing up. My ability to emphasize details and my role as a team player during my working period with the models has allowed me to be more creative and innovative. After overcoming these challenges, I am eager to participate fully in all aspects of university life to embrace inclusiveness, sustainability, and collaboration. I feel confident that I can push myself to achieve any goal as I have throughout my life in Peru. I would also use the skills gained to educate the Latino community about fashion and break beauty stereotypes that come along with it. Additionally, I would want to embrace my culture and show other people about it and the beauty of our people.
I want to major in advertising, marketing, and communication in FIT because of its core values that embrace inclusiveness, and a sense of community. As the institution promotes creativity, experimentation, and diverse experiential learning, I believe that FIT would be a place to hone my skills and become the best version of myself. The degree course will provide me with the building blocks I need to enter into the fashion world. As FIT has state-of-the-art design studios for students to practice their techniques and have a strong reputation for varying cultural backgrounds, this institution is what I want. It will give me a platform to assimilate influences from across the world.
