The interview was taken through on a face to face communication with a construction engineer working with a construction company based in New York State. Having graduated with a degree in construction engineering, Mr. Smith secured himself a job at the New York-based construction firm where he has been working for the last two years. He works at the firm as a construction manager where he is charged with planning and design aspect of the work as well as management of activities at the construction. The interview involved a one on one interaction with the engineer with key major questions focusing on how work experience and how to increase the competency as an engineer in this area.

After a short interaction with Mr. Smith, I went on to inquire more about the background of his work as a construction engineer. On his response, Mr. Smith said, “ Construction engineering is a fusion between civil engineering and construction management. The planning and design aspect of the field comes from the civil engineering discipline while management of the activities in the construction site is derived from the area of construction management.” Feeling satisfied with his response, I proceeded by asking him on what strengths are required for one to work in this field as well as his experience as a construction manager for the last two years. The first major strength required of a construction engineer according to Smith is technical skills. A good engineer must have good understanding of mathematics and other skills required to identify and solve engineering problems. The other strengths mentioned by Smith include creativity, good communication skills, and project management skills.

As the interview proceeded, I asked Smith what his duties and responsibilities were as a construction engineer. He said that at his capacity, he is charged with many responsibilities. As a construction engineer, “I am charged with developing a construction plan, overseeing engineering processes, managing construction processes and drafting the technical support documents.” Each of these responsibilities requires various skills and qualifications for one to be a competent engineer. He also noted that he works in collaboration with other professionals to realize the success of the project. Through creativity, leadership, planning skills and communication skills, Smith noted that he works with other professionals to make the project successful.

Public safety is one of the major ethical concerns that Smith says construction engineers’ faces. Engineers need to pay attention to public safety to avoid legal and ethical issues. Another ethical concern for engineers is environmental protection which is one of the major areas of public controversy. They are required to protect the environment from any pollution and degradation even as they work to make their projects successful.
