Stressors to college life include; academics, the death of a family member, sleep difficulties, career-related issues and family problems. Stress and anxiety levels are elevated among college students (Haidar, De Vries, Karavetian, & El-Rassi, 2018) . The consistency of results in this paper on reviewing effects of stress and anxiety in adequate sample sizes would better evaluate the relationship between stress or anxiety and its influence on academic performance among college students.

American College Health Association in the National College Health Assessment II carried out in 2014, reported stress, anxiety and sleep difficulties as the leading causes of poor academic performances. Out of a total of 140 institutions with 79, 266 being involved in the research, the average response was about 26.0%. College students reported stress to be the leading cause of getting a lower grade on an exam or project, incompletion of the coursework or significant disturbance in research or thesis. About 30.3% of all students had experienced an academic performance drop due to stress. 21. 8% of the total population had anxiety while approximately 21.0% had sleep difficulties (National College Health Assessment II: Reference Group Executive Summary Spring, 2014) . At the time of the research, approximately 43.7% more than average stress in the past 12 months while about 14.3% (17.5% Female, 8.0% Male) had been diagnosed with anxiety.

A cross-sectional, questionnaire survey based on fourth-year students at UKM Malaysia, revealed that essential types of stressors in the university were related academic stresses, teaching and learning related stressors, group activity associated stressors as well as interpersonal and intrapersonal associated stressors (Siraj et al., 2014) . The stress levels affecting the students was approximated to 84.0%.

A case study based in Subharti Medical College demonstrated that in 114 students (62 female, 52 male), stress had a negative bearing on their academic performance attributed to mental fatigue, poor retention and recall and poor concentration (Kumar, Sharma, Surbhi, & Rajesh, 2014) . A recent study based on 200 students (90male, 110 female) at Sheikh Zayed Medical College and Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan reported similar findings (Qurrat & Haider, 2017) . Approximately 87.3% of the students confirmed to getting poor marks attributed to stress and anxiety in undergraduate education.

All these findings directly point to a direct correlation between the stress levels in college students and the academic performance. From the above observations, it is easy to point out that increased levels of stress in college students have contributed to a decline in academic achievement. It is thus essential that students in college are supported during periods of stress.
