“I will always love you” is a sad love story song by Whitney Houston. Whitney was an artist who struggled with drug addiction for the better part of her life. She was married to another song writer Bobby Brown with whom they took drugs together. In the song, Whitney sings to a lover who she says she will always love but cannot be with because she thinks she is not good enough for him. "If I should stay, I will only be in your way.... " "we both know I'm not what you need... " sings Whitney. In these lyrics, one can easily tell that Whitney was contending with self-esteem challenges in her life.

Whitney was a great singer recognized throughout the world. At the time she rose to fame, the world was still filled with racial discrimination which left many black people, and especially women, not comfortable with their skin. Her life however wasn’t a happy one. She was always on media headlines for controversial issues such as cancelling shows and drug abuse. Even her death was controversial: She died in a bath tab after a drug overdose. She expressed love for the lover she sings to in the song but she also feels he deserves a person better than her. In light of the myriad controversies in her life, it might well be the case that she did not want to entrap the man she loved.

If the song was produced by someone else, it is likely the above interpretation would be quite different. Most art work reflects the life of an artist, the experiences he or she had undergone and opinion he or she holds. Also, people tend to interpret art according to the personality or the artist’s life. If 'I will always love you' had been sang by a disabled person, for example, one would probably conclude that the reason behind the feeling of unworthiness expressed in the song is attributable to the disability.
