In recent years, the United States has put in place several policies in the health sector that have enhanced the implementation of Health Information Technology. Health Information Technology refers to processing information by use of computer software and hardware. Examples of policies that have led to the implementation of HIT are “Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act.” And the introduction of Electronic Health Records Systems which involved introduction of measures that required hospitals to implement certified EHRs by certain dates. The move would enable hospitals to obtain monetary incentives. Efforts were also directed towards establishing extension centers regionally to enable use of EHR.

The implementation of Electronic Health Records in the United States has not been without challenges. Change is often times encountered by resistance. EHR have faced resistance from board members all the way to the medical and support staff. Introduction of new EHR methods has also been encountered by decreased employee productivity. Implementation of the systems has therefore required additional overtime wages, support, and training of staff. The movement of data to introduced EHR systems requires a lot of time input and can be quite exhausting. It also involves migrating of confidential and sensitive data that requires accuracy so as to ensure excellent care of patients.

Although the health care sector has been slow to adapt it, HIT Helps clinicians to avoid making medical mistakes. HIT systems warn medical practitioners in situations where their actions could cause their patients harm. They facilitate effective communication by patients and offers support across practitioners. HIT also improves communication between medics and their patients. Most of the systems have online portals where patients can access their test results, review their medical records and send their doctors emails. HIT has helped to ease paper work for nurses thus saving time, Shortening patients stay in the hospital, and facilitating efficient administration of drugs.
