I once had to write an argumentative paper about the need to legalize marijuana as a means of mitigating the drug problem. I started with an argument proposal, which is prepared before picking a side in the argument. My basis for beginning with a proposal included a desire to make an argument from the right side of the divide. The drug problem is a critical menace and I wanted my work to contribute towards establishing a solution as opposed not extending the debate. As part of the proposal, I had to undertake some reading on the issue of substance abuse and marijuana. I took the time to establish the various biases of the different commentators in order to arrive at the most balanced commentaries. The proposal served the purpose of ensuring that my argument remained ethical. In modern times, many arguments, academic or otherwise only seek to cement a preset position. An ethical argument seeks to remain on the right side of the issue by focusing on factual evidence.
Among the most effective elements of my research proposal, was the proviso of thorough and effective research as a basis for the argument made. I not only researched on what commentators said about the issue but also why they may have said that. For example, finance and politics are an important basis for arguments on social issues. Research is expensive while the results of the research also have minatory implications. Establishing which interest group funded a research project is important to the effective interpretation of the outcomes of such a research project. Secondly, in modern democratic countries, most commentators look at social issues from a political perspective. Among the most prominent political perspectives is conservatism versus liberalism. I made my argument effective by avoiding biased research or commentary and focusing more on nuanced commentators. Basing the logical aspect of my argument on fair and balanced commentary made it effective in convincing the target audience.
