Introduction 

One of the critical debates in the United States today has been on the need for having to establish policies that would help in limiting the number of guns in the hand of the citizens. The debate has been fueled by the high number of gun-related cases of violence in the country. Additionally, this can also be seen from the fact that the country has been experiencing a high number of mass shootings resulting in notably high number of deaths and injuries. The need to establish gun control is seen as a key framework through which to maximize the protection of the members of the public. However, the implementation of gun control policies has also been met by resistance from different persons, who argue on the basis that the right to bear arms is enshrined within the United States Constitution. The focus of this report is to evaluate the demand for gun control from both perspectives to help in determining the best position on this particular issue.

Arguments Supporting Gun Control 

When evaluating the argument on gun control, it is essential to consider some of the underlying impacts associated with gun violence in the United States, as this would serve as a basis through which to determine the value of the gun control. The first key aspect to note is that the adoption of gun control policies is not seen as a key measure of limiting people from accessing or owning guns. Instead, these policies only seek to create that positive avenue through which to ensure that the persons that can buy guns do not have a criminal background and are mentally stable.

One of the greatest challenges that the country is facing is that some of the persons buying or accessing guns legally, tend to have a long criminal history; thus, meaning that they are much more likely to use the same weapons that they procure for criminal purposes. The adoption of gun control policies is seen as a key measure through which to minimize guns falling into the wrong hand, as this would have severe impacts on society. The second key aspect to note is that the debate on gun control must also take into account the havoc that guns are having in the streets today with most of the guns used having being procured or purchased legally. The number of persons dying as a result of gun violence in the United States is over 15,000, which excludes the high number of people that are using guns as weapons for suicide.

Additionally, it must also be noted that the country has also experienced a significant spike in the number of mass shootings in which gunmen target specific areas or venues with a high number of people for different purposes. Between January and November 2018, the total number of mass shooting recorded has been higher when compared to a total number of mass shootings recorded in 2017. From this statistic, it is clear that the issue is escalating at a rate that stakeholders in the security sector believe would cause serious implications in the future. The demand for having to come up with policies on gun control is viewed as an approach through which to minimize such cases of gun violence. The policies are considered as critical structures through which to control the usage of the guns that are bought from different sources in the United States.

Arguments against Gun Control 

The main argument that has been propelled against the establishment and enactment of policies that support gun control is on the fact that the constitution gives every American citizen the right to own a gun. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution pointed to the fact that every person in the United States has a right to bear arms meaning that the establishment of gun control policies would serve as a limitation to these rights. On the other hand, the argument against gun control has also been driven by the fact that the percentage of legal guns used in gun violence is somewhat minimal. Consequently, this means that the establishment of policies supporting gun control may not achieve any positive results, as this is a decision that must be supported by the gun owners. Implementation of such laws would only mean that the people intend to own guns would be subjected to unnecessary processes, which go against their rights and freedoms, as indicated within the constitution.

In summary, the debate on gun violence has escalated significantly within the last few years as a result of the increasing rates of gun-related violence, which result in a notably high number of deaths and injuries. The establishment of gun control is seen as a key framework through which to ensure that the persons intend to, but guns are taken through a thorough process that would ensure that they do not have a criminal past or suffering from any mental conditions. However, the opponents of this debate argue that the establishment of the policies would only serve to limit the rights and freedoms of the American people, as indicated within the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
