The “Happy Prince” was the work of Oscar Wild, and it comprises of numerous lessons. On one side it criticizes how the society can be cruel and heartless but, on the other hand, it is concerned with the compassion to humans’ troubles. Therefore, this paper sought to provide the character traits of the swallow, the prince, and society in general as well as addressing various adult issues pinpointed by the tale.

The Happy Prince who is the main character in the story portrays the trait of being caring for the less fortunate. His genuine compassion and selfless was evident when he gave out the sapphire to a poor boy and girl hence remaining blind. Therefore, it is vividly clear that the prince was ready to sacrifice everything at the expense of the poor even if it meant giving out his body parts. The Swallow is the other main character in this tale, at first, he was just an ordinary stubborn bird, and he was only attentive to the Prince because he was curious and felt sorry for him. His stay with the Prince started transforming him from somebody who was less selfless to somebody who was compassionate and caring of other people (Wilde, 2017). Also, he was affectionate to the extent that even being sure that he will die out of the cold, he decided to stick around his friend. In general, the Prince and the Swallow can be said to be caring and compassionate characters.

In the tale, Wilde characterized the people of the city to be cruel and heartless (Wilde, 2017). However, his preference fell on those who are less fortunate and those who are ready to aid them out of the suffering like the likes of the swallow and the prince.

Despite the tale main message being directed to children, it also addresses some adult issues such as true love and caring for others (Wilde, 2017). Such scenarios are evident when the swallow does not abandon the Prince until the point of death as well as aiding the poor in the society is also emphasized.

In conclusion, the tale is an outstanding one, and it presents the modern society of how among the many cruel and heartless people there are always those who tend to be different and ready to love and care for others.
