Coming from a family of religious individuals, I felt tremendous guilt when I smoked a cigarette and drunk beer for the first time during my initial year in college. We had been invited to a friend’s party on a weekend night, while everyone was drinking and smoking. Since it was my first time to drink beer and smoke cigarette, I got so drunk to an extent that my friends took me home. I could not remember how I arrived home, but I was lucky that my parents were not at home that night to see me drunk. I cleaned myself up the following day and pretended as if nothing had happened when my parents came home that night. However, I felt shame when facing them since I believed to have done something immoral and against the teachings that they had given me ever since I was a kid. I wanted to tell my parents about what had happened, but I feared how they would react or think, which I believe would be the case with anyone involved in such a situation. I told myself severally that my parents would express disappointment in my behavior, and that I had tarnished the name of the family among other issues. Numerous questions haunted me day and night, while I believed that the ideal solution would be to tell my parents about the things disturbing me. My parents had also raising doubts that my behavior had changed and that I was not acting in the usual manner.
The moment I decided to open up to my father was a defining moment for me. I thought he would be angry with me for engaging in such a reckless behavior, although he remained calm while listening to my entire story as it unfolded. My father handled me with love, poise, equanimity, care, as well as some sense of humor. Afterwards, he offered me deep advice concerning the influence of peer pressure into harming the behavior of young individuals. Furthermore, he encouraged me to seek counsel whenever I felt tempted to indulge in such kinds of behaviors. My dad made me feel loved and appreciated, which led me to believe that resulting to drugs in order to please friends does not make someone a hero, but rather serves as a period in which individuals can ruin their lives. Since the incident, I have experienced wrong and right dilemmas in my diverse undertakings during school life and other aspects of life, although I have managed to handle most of them. For those that I cannot handle on my own, seeking the assistance of my parents, trusted friends, and teachers would allow me to deal with the issues in an appropriate and effective manner.
