In many parts of the globe, many people perceive that the United States government is a democracy and that it promotes democracy around the global. However, how can such perceptions be justified? Apparently, most people believe that this is true because the U.S government says so repeatedly. Nevertheless, there are four particular elements are considered prior to deeming a government to be a democracy or otherwise (Almond & Verba, 2015). The American government is thought to be a democracy because it exhibits all the four elements that define what democracy is.
To begin with, the United States government has a political system that gives its citizens the power to elect and replace their leaders through credible elections. Credible elections in this regards refer to voting practices that are free and fair. Secondly, they system of governance allows citizens to participate actively in politics as well as civic activities. Finally, the U.S government can be said to be a democracy since it has a rule of law whereby the country’s legislation and procedures are applied equally to the citizens irrespective of the race, religion and social status (De Tocqueville, Mansfield & Winthrop, 2000). However, this is one of the hotly debated issues since some people perceive that some laws target particular ethnic and religious groups.

Notably, the U.S government respects the rights of the citizens such as the liberty of speech (Sedler, 2006). Therefore, the citizens are given a chance to question the decisions that the government makes. Besides, the government has allowed all the groups an opportunity to practice their culture and control some of their own affairs. Of essence, the government serves to ensure that each group respect each other’s culture as a way of promoting democracy in the country (Diener & Suh, 2000) . Of essence, the U.S government ensures that citizens express their opinions freely and listens to the views of other individuals irrespective of their stand on the state (Ruane, 2014).
In conclusion, the United States government is a democracy since it allows the citizens to exercise their rights. People may have different views on whether the U.S government is a democracy or not. However, the fact that the country demonstrates all the elements of democracy implies that the U.S government is a democracy.
