When President Trump assumed office, he promised to deliver on his campaign promises, and most experts were sure he would act tough on immigration. Most people are already aware of the initiatives taken so far to deal with illegal immigration into the country, including shutting out millions of people who cross the southern border and the institution of other stringent policies. As to whether the proposed policies will succeed is not the concern of this paper; rather, the controversies around the strategies adopted this far is the focal point. The recent immigrant family separation policy that the Trump regime adopted has been subject of heated debate, and this paper reviews two of the most striking news items of 2019 on the same, which concern the conflict between the president and his secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen in an annotated bibliography of two news articles.

Bringing to light the extent of the conflict between the President and Nielsen, is Goldberg’s article, which proposed to the public not to sympathize with the latter’s decision to resign from her position as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. As Goldberg reports in the opinion column of the New York Times , Nielsen was warry of her relationship with the public considering that only some months before her resignation, she had been outspoken on her defensive for Trump’s policies, especially on the family separation strategy of deterring illegal immigration into the country. Nielsen, the article suggests, had contributed to the suffering of many children and their families, and she had lied to Congress in her testimony about the intention of the regime to separate families back in December 2018. Now that President Trump has been verbal on his commitment to shut out millions of immigrants and asylum seekers, he has openly spoken about the separation of families of illegal immigrants at the ports of entry, which confirms that Nielsen had initially lied to Congress through indicating that the regime was not interested in doing so (Goldberg, 2019). As Goldberg writes, Nielsen’s resignation had come because she felt that the President’s plan was not properly informed, and that it would cause more trouble than it would solve.

Consistent with the idea that Nielsen lied in her testimony to Congress on the intention to separate families of immigrants at ports of entry, Tapper (2019) reports for the CNN that the President was openly supporting the policy and urging border officials to defy court orders that would direct otherwise. The article reports and confirms that the President had conflicted with the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security during a meeting held in the Oval Office of the White House some time before the date of the news article. The President, the article indicates, is keen on border security, and he feels that dealing with immigration is the only way out of keeping foreigners out of the ‘already full’ nation. Nielsen, in her attempts to ensure that the President was taking the right decision, informed him of the repercussions of family separation, which she had refused to consent to some time back, suggested that closing down ports of entry and instituting family separation policies would escalated illegal immigration. However, keen to make an impression, the President had indicated that she did not care about critics as long as he succeed in shutting out foreigners.
