More people are using the Internet to express their opinions, communicate, and connect globally through social media platforms hence changing their global identity. This paper will discuss two important concepts in regard to communication issues facing a global identity and provide specific examples to support the understanding of the concepts. The paper will then discuss how internet use has shaped my identity and communication styles. The paper will also discuss the impact of e-netizen identity with a specific example.

The Internet as Our Central Station

The Internet can be termed as a central hub that facilitates global communication and connection from diverse people. Ting-Toomey and Chung (2012), state that, “For better or worse, the Internet is our central station, the hub that offers us a wide-open space to communicate globally and to connect with individuals from diverse walks of life”. Additionally, the e-netizens use a common language, English while using the Internet and as a result, people get connected. To add on that, I have personally used the platform to make connections with most organizations and institutions, make orders, and leave feedbacks. My question is how can technology be utilized in solving the language barrier and hence facilitate better experience in the communication process.

Wired Communication

The use of Internet at personal level has changed intrapersonal and interpersonal communication globally. As a result, blogging and tweeting has risen significantly over the past decade as more people seem to use the Internet to express their opinions. Ting-Toomey and Chung (2012) state that, “More importantly, we now have shared experiences across time and space, allowing us to communicate in real time about events that unfold thousands of miles away.” To add on that, the use of related social media platforms changed the diverse viewpoints that I was getting from friends and relatives as I often follow topics and friends with common points of view as mine. My question is how technology can reduce the overuse of the Internet especially in social media platforms as they tend to addictive.

The use of the Internet has shaped the way I make purchases as I seem to most of it online. I have also changed my mode of communication from traditional texting to the use of Facebook and WhatsApp which depend on the Internet. My identity also changes every time I use Internet platforms as I tend to portray a better personality than in real life. The e-netizen identity speaks to me through YouTube as I spend most of my time watching live channels and trending videos from selected subscriptions.

Conclusion

The Internet has enabled effective communications globally connecting people from different races and diversity. The use of social media platforms has facilitated intrapersonal and interpersonal communication as people are able to express their opinions on a common platform.
